Top 20 cities most prone to malware infections

Malware

According to a new study by Enigma Software, 2015 was a banner year for malware infections. They looked at over 25 million infections in the 150 largest cities in the USA, and compiled this list of the Top 20 US cities with the most infections per capita.

The information was collected from users that have Enigma’s SpyHunter anti-spyware software installed on their Windows-based machine. Adding mobile infections to these figures would imply the malware problem is quite prevalent in our device-oriented world.

Malware infections typically come from infected content on websites, infected downloads and infected email attachments. High activity days, like the Black Friday to Cyber Monday weekend, or events that spark a flurry of internet activity, often yield spikes in infections for shoppers or news-hungry internet searchers.

Patrick Morganelli, senior vice president of technology at Enigma Software, was at a loss to explain the trends.

“I wish there was an easy way to determine what makes people in one area more susceptible to malware infections,” he said. “But there are so many different ways that infections can end up on computers that it’s tough to make any generalizations about why certain folks in certain cities seem to have more than others.”
